Last week, I was searching the Dispatch photo archives for something completely unrelated, and a 1997 photo of these came up. The caption said that that antique mall has been trying to sell those things since 1985. They’ve been trying to sell them for 26 YEARS.

Report: County’s kids not faring well during recession

In a recently released report, an Ohio child advocacy group has warned that child poverty in the state is bad and getting worse and that the hardest-hit region continues to be southern Appalachian Ohio including Athens County.
Well, no kidding, say local observers.
“There have always been a lot of kids (in this area) who were poor because their parents were low-wage workers,” noted Jack Frech, director of Athens County’s Department of Job and Family Services.

Holla, Jackson County! I am glad my home county is the best at something. When you’re the worst at something (feeding hungry children), I like to think you’re also the best at something (being a charming impoverished Appalachian stereotype for the rest of Ohio to pity).
